Symposium 2019
A foundational year shaped by research outreach, scientific mentorship, and the vision that would later become BIOTech Futures. Explore the origins of the BIO Challenge, Professor Hala Zreiqat's commitment to inspiring future STEM leaders, and the early collaborations connecting students, researchers, and innovation-driven biotechnology education across Australia and beyond.
The Vision Behind BIOTech Futures
From Research Outreach to Student Innovation
The vision for BIOTech Futures began almost a decade earlier, when Professor Hala Zreiqat travelled to Jordan to share her research with high school students at The King's Academy and the International Academy Amman.
Where it started
These early experiences highlighted the importance of connecting young students with scientific research, innovation, and mentorship opportunities capable of inspiring future leaders in STEM and biotechnology.
In 2019, this vision evolved into the Bioengineering Innovation Outreach (BIO) Challenge, developed in collaboration with the ARC Training Centre for Innovative BioEngineering and researchers from The University of Sydney.
Where it led
The initiative brought together more than 200 students and 50 academics to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world medical and scientific challenges.
The success of the BIO Challenge established the foundation for the future expansion of BIOTech Futures, including national Challenges, Symposium programs, mentorship initiatives, and interdisciplinary STEM collaborations.
